Of course nothing compares to flying to Europe to pick one up yourself from a market but should you find overseas flights a bit out of reach right now, then online is the next best thing.

As you know I am a designer by day so I think that totally justifies my slight obsession with type in any form - so you can imagine how cool I think these personalised name puzzles you can get from Mooo.com.au are.

I have a lot of nieces and nephews who live either interstate or overseas so I've no idea what presents they already have come time to shop for their birthday, but I think these puzzles are super cute, educational and fun for the munchkins.

The talented Stacy over at Happy Happy Housewife has just posted pics of her ceiling makeover and I'm really impressed!

I want to do some form of stenciling in my home (and no, it's not daggy anymore - there are a tonne of beautiful stencils out there and it's way cheaper than wallpaper) and this is just the style of stencil I have been looking for.

I can totally see my stairwell done in a silver pattern, it's a pretty big space but I think a light colour would work well.

I just love it. You can order the stencil she used from Cutting Edge Stencils in the US.

Having recently done some letterpress work at the Melbourne Museum of Printing I can tell you a lot of love, time and inky hands have gone in to the making of this cookbook.

Very limited edition of 100 so be quick if you want one. What a brilliant Christmas present for that hard to buy for someone who has great taste and almost everything. Bet they don't yet have one of these! Nor do I - where's Santa? I need to update my wishlist...

I wanted to post about 'Dumbo Feather, pass it on' today as despite thinking that everyone in the whole world already knew about this beautiful mook (that's a half mag, half book peeps) I've just had someone in the studio ask me what I was looking at.

I love this beautiful mook and a subscription to it is my one present I give myself every year.

The spreads are beautiful, nice and visual just the way we designers like it.

But also, the content is just devine. I love being curled up on the sofa with a cuppa reading mine when it arrives. Though I am a bit behind with the last few issues. I just can't find where they are packed!

As you are well aware, my life is currently consumed with our new house and therefore I spend my evenings looking for inspiration to decorate said new house. We've lived in a two bedroom unit for so long that whilst I have colours picked for the two bedrooms I have completely forgotten about the extra room which will be my new studio.

Whilst the colour scheme isn't yet sorted (suggestions welcome) these Pantone tins will definitely be making an appearance. How brilliant are those colours.

My super productive week continues, more of my stock is now labelled and ready for the North Melbourne market in just two weeks but I've put this Curious Galliard pendant aside for my online store.

It's the perfect accessory for a girls night out...

The felt pendant is super lightweight but at 7.5cm in width and height it's quite a statement piece for summer! The petals are cut from vintage kimono fabric so it's a one off.

There is definitely something in the water right now. In between packing up our house for our move in a couple of weeks I'm preparing for a market as well as getting my online store stocked with goodies ready for Christmas.

These hairclips are available in my Made it online store right now. They are one of a kind as the fabric is vintage kimono and I don't have a lot of it left.

I think this summer weather has cleared out all the winter cobwebs. I haven't been this productive in a long time. Let's see what I can accomplish this weekend...

I just had to show you these dapper gentlemen which are handmade by another Melbourne crafty lass who goes by the name of Handmade Romance.

You may have seen her work before - she's the one behind all those bearded bloke brooches that pop up all over the place. However it's these bow tied men that caught my eye. I think one of these sitting on my studio desk would keep me highly amused. Nice work lady!

I was trawling the internet yesterday and found this clock that I'm totally in love with. It's from a beautiful blog I stumbled across called madebygirl which is by Jennifer Ramos. I'm totally going to do one for our lounge and the good news is husband likes it and has suggested one of his Asterix figurines goes in one of the boxes so it will be a collaborative effort! I already have some beautiful Florence Broadhurst wallpaper I didn't know what to do with along with some fabric that I recently stenciled which I think will work perfectly. So excited. Will post the finished product when its up. It can be my September project. Yay!

I know, long time between posts but I have just been so busy between all my jobs, the market and starting evening school (I'm studying typography at RMIT - told you I was a font nerd!) but I'm slowly getting back on track. So excited to have one market under my belt, it was such a success. I sold quite a few pieces to some really lovely people and it's just so humbling to think that people out there are wearing my designs. Thank you all for your support.

Well sort of, the very busy girls over at Thread Den are putting together a fashion show for the upcoming Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 09. With the title of 'Killer Queen' and featuring dance, drama and opera this is going to be one show that I will not be missing. They have asked a few of us designers to contribute some pieces towards the show and below is my work in progress. So whilst I personally won't be strutting my stuff on the catwalk you'll hopefully see a few of my pieces adorning the models...

A while back I posted an example of a design I was working on for my upcoming screen printing class at Thread Den. I had a lot of fun in the class and whilst I had to change my design from the original as mine was too complex to cut by hand with a scalpel (I got a bit carried away in Illustrator one day!) I'm so pleased with what I ended up with. I decided on a simple design of Papillon (that's French for butterfly) which I printed on four different blue fabric swatches. I'm thinking they could look fab framed up on the wall as a series of prints perhaps? What do you think?

Dreams can come true...

I'm a strong believer in setting dreams/goals - they give me something to aim for when I feel I'm wondering a little aimlessly through life and when they come true the feeling is pretty amazing. One of my dreams I've had since high school was to work as a designer, something which after a lot of hard work, some serious focus and a touch of luck came true - I've now been a publication designer for over three years and still love going to work everyday. I know I'm pretty fortunate to be able to say that.

Another one of my dreams has been to own a Kat Macleod print since I first saw her work a few years back, I j'adore her work and my walls just weren't complete until I had one. Lucky for me I managed to get a copy of her London print when she had a show at the Lamington Drive last November. Why London of all her work? Well, husband is English so I thought it was rather fitting really. Here's a few pics of her I mean MY print - love it! So happy, now I need a beautiful frame and the help of husband to get it up on the wall.

Going a little bit Gocco

Last night I went to a Brown Owls members night to learn how to Gocco. It's a fab little screen printing device that is super easy to use and needless to say I walked away wanting one for myself. The first image is of the lovely Brown Owls founder Pip from Meet me at Mikes showing us how to Gocco. The second image shows a few of the prints we made and some of the treats on offer including cheeses, olives, chocolate and some gorgeous home made Gluhwein that Pip whipped up. The third image is of my prints that I made on the night, not quite sure what I'll do with them all but it was a lot of fun so I got a bit carried away with the Gocco. Thanks Pip for a lovely evening, I look forward to what's in store for the next one. Hoot.

Beautiful Florence Broadhurst

I was fortunate enough to get along to the recent Florence Broadhurst pop-up shop at the Melbourne Docklands. It was only there for four days but I still managed to have bit of a splurge and buy not one but two rolls of her wallpapers.

Bit mad really as I rent but I'm thinking they will look fab as framed prints. The gold flowers on a silver background is her Spotted Floral design and the blue butterfly print on the marbled white background is her Tropical Floral design (apologies for the poor quality, they were taken on my phone and not with a camera). You can see more of her beautiful designs over at Signature Prints.

Butternut and Feta Risotto recipe

Bec over at Madeit.com.au has asked me to submit this recipe for her new recipe zine she is putting together for the upcoming Stitches and Craft Show in Sydney so I thought I would share it with you also as its one of the yummiest recipes I know. Enjoy.

Butternut and Feta Risotto

Serves: 2

Takes: 25 mins

Ingredients:

olive oil - 2 tablespoons

garlic cloves - 6 unpeeled

thyme sprig - 1

butternut pumpkin - half a small one, peeled and cubed

vegetable stock - 500ml (2 cups)

butter - 1 tablespoon

small onion - 1 finely chopped

risotto rice - 135g (2/3 cup)

dry white wine - 125ml (1/2 cup)

parsley - 2 tablespoons finely chopped

feta cheese - 60g (handful) crumbled

parmesan cheese - freshly grated

Turn the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Put the olive oil in a roasting tin with the garlic, thyme and butternut pumpkin. Coat everything in the oil and season well. Roast in the oven for about 25 minutes, turn everything over once (handy hint: whilst this is roasting, complete steps 2 and 3 of the recipe). Take the garlic out of its papery skin but leave it whole. Throw away the thyme.

Heat the stock in a saucepan until it is simmering, then leave it over a low heat. Melt the butter in a large, deep, heavy-based frying pan, then gently cook the onion until it is soft, but not browned. Add the rice, reduce the heat to low and stir well to coat all the grains of rice in the butter.

Add the wine to the rice, turn up the heat to medium and cook, stirring the rice, until all the liquid has been absorbed. Add the hot stock, a couple of ladles at a time, stirring continuously so that the rice cooks evenly and releases some of it starch. This is what gives the risotto a creamy consistency.

Once all the stock is added, taste the rice to see if it is al dente. It it impossible to gauge the exact amount of liquid you will need as every risotto will be a little different. If the rice is not yet cooked and you have run out of stock, use water. Stop cooking the rice as soon as it is soft but still has a little texture or bite in the middle of the grain. Taste the risotto and add seasoning if it needs it. Stir in the butternut pumpkin, garlic, parsley and feta, squashing the vegetables slightly as you stir. Serve with grated parmesan.

Just back from the gorgeous Shirt and Skirt market which is held at the Abbotsford Convent here in Melbourne - what a great market! There is some seriously talented crafty types around and the products on offer were really varied and gorgeous. Fortunately it was quite pleasant day today as it is an outdoor market held in the grounds of the convent but I will definitely be popping back in to that market again. Curious Llama at The Substation ArtCraft2009 exhibition (2nd - 10th May)

Oh so super excited, I will have a few of my pieces on display at The Substation as part of the ArtCraft 2009 exhibition. Its on the weekends of 2nd - 3rd May and 7th - 10th May. Please pop in to see what the crafty people of Melbourne have been up to if you get the chance.

The exhibition is open to people who explore their creative side by quilting, woodwork, and jewellery making to name but a few. It is only open to hobby enthusiasts (no professionals) which makes it a really unique platform for us to show our wares on.

There is also a people's choice award so please vote and show your support for the crafty types.

The Saturday of the 2nd is also the Artists Market which is a monthly market and definitely worth a look. Also, being under cover means that if this very gloomy Melbourne weather keeps up you won't get wet, very nice to know!

Curious Llama in Desktop magazine - March 09 issue

For those of you who read Desktop magazine which is all about Australian Design and Digital culture you will be familiar with the too cool section - appropriately named Coolstuff. Each month 10 cool items are listed and I was super excited to see that Curious Llama made it on that very fine list back in March this year. That's my Curious Bordeaux pendant (click on the image above for a larger preview image) which I have since sold at the Thread Den in Melbourne but there are similar items still available through either my etsy shop or mymadeit.com.au shop.

Sorry for the delay in between posts, I've been a busy bee behind the scenes trying to get theCurious Llama jewellery range out there so here's the results...

Well, I have finally made the leap and decided to start my own blog, a very scary thing for me to do but here goes.

Take a deep breath and off I jump...

First, a little bit about me. I am a graphic/publication/jewellery designer based in Melbourne, Australia. I love what I do with my day to day job (that's the publication designer bit) but recently started making jewellery to sell online for bit of a hobby and as a creative outlet away from my beloved Mac. I live with my amazing husband and one very fluffy cat in a lovely apartment near the beach so yes, life is pretty good.

I have had a lovely productive Sunday loading a few new products onto both my etsy andmade.it.com.au stores. After making a sale to a lovely lady in Nashville, Tennessee this past week and sending most of my ribbon jewellery to the recent stitches and craft fair with theThread Den ladies (I sell my jewellery in their gorgeous store) my product selection was looking a bit empty online so I finally put a few more up.

Just three for today, they say to load a few each day rather than in a batch so I'll post a few more over the next couple of days. Please pop in to either of my stores to say hello.
